No.226 "About the involvement of the tourism industry with regional development 2026" October issue

The Chinowa (Grass Ring) at Take Jinja

Recently, the number of accesses from overseas has increased dramatically. Previously, it was around 100 page views per day, but now it's doubled, and sometimes even quadrupled. When I inquired with Gemini, they said it's highly likely that this is due to AI agents (AI bots and crawlers). (Since they said so, it must be true). With the increased activity in AI learning and information gathering, various generative and search AIs such as ChatGPT (OpenAI), Claude (Anthropic), Gemini (Google), and Perplexity are crawling (scraping) websites around the world to gather the latest information. Themes like "regional development" and "tourism industry" are apparently among the genres that AIs prefer to refer to as sources for learning and summarization.
The benefit is that it makes it easier for AI search engines and summarization tools to cite the content, which in the long term can lead to human users arriving via AI (citation effect). Really?

What is Ise Jingu?

Ise Jingu is a Shinto shrine located in Ise City, Mie Prefecture. Its official name does not include a regional designation and is simply "Jingu." Standing at the pinnacle of approximately 80,000 shrines across Japan, it boasts a history spanning over 2,000 years.

・Ancestors of the Imperial Family and General Guardian Deity of Japan: It has long been revered by many people as the spiritual home of the Japanese people.
・Collective Name for 125 Shrines: When people generally refer to "Ise Jingu," it is not only the two central Shogu (principal shrines), but also the collective name for all 125 shrines, including Bessugu (associated subsidiary shrines), Sessha (subsidiary shrines), Massha (minor subsidiary shrines), and Shokansha (jurisdictional shrines).

The core of Ise Jingu consists of two main Shogu located a significant distance apart from each other:

Naiku (Kotai Jingu)

・Enshrined Deity: Amaterasu Omikami (Sun Goddess)
・Overview: It enshrines the Sun Goddess, who is the general guardian deity of Japan and the ancestral deity of the Imperial Family. It also has a deep connection as the ancestral spirit shrine of the Imperial Palace. Flowing through the center of the sacred precinct is the Isuzugawa River, where visitors purify their mind and body with the clean waters before worshiping.

Geku (Toyouke Daijingu)

 ・Enshrined Deity: Toyouke Omikami
・Overview: The guardian deity of all industries, including food, clothing, and shelter. As the deity governing the Mike (sacred meals) for Amaterasu Omikami, Toyouke Omikami was welcomed from Tango Province (northern Kyoto Prefecture today) to the current location about 1,500 years ago.

Ritual Etiquette

As an ancient custom, it is considered the proper order to first visit Geku and then proceed to Naiku (a practice known as Geku-sensai).
Yuitsu-Shinmei-Zukuri Style

This is an extremely simple yet majestic shrine architecture style that preserves ancient Japanese building techniques to the present day. Characterized by its linear, minimalist beauty, it is built using traditional woodwork that uses almost no nails.

Shikinen Sengu

This is a major Shinto ritual held once every 20 years, in which the sacred object (goshintai) is transferred and the shrine buildings are completely rebuilt. Passed down seamlessly for about 1,300 years since the Asuka period (during the reign of Empress Jito in 690 AD), it represents a uniquely Japanese view of life and death and aesthetic sense—not only passing down architectural techniques and traditional crafts, but also symbolizing "eternal youth and renewal" (Tokowaka) by keeping the shrine buildings eternally fresh.

Ise Jingu is not merely a tourist destination; it is the birthplace of Japanese culture, where rich nature (the deep forest surrounding the sacred precinct) and a solemn atmosphere merge into one. The next Shikinen Sengu is scheduled for 2033 (Reiwa 15), and preparations and related events are gradually underway toward it.

Aside from the central Shogu, Ise Jingu features various shrines (sha) with distinct roles and characteristics enshrined within the precincts and surrounding areas. These are systematically organized as the 125 Shrines of Jingu, with both Geku (Toyouke Daijingu) and Naiku (Kotai Jingu) featuring highly ranked Bessugu (subordinate shrines) as well as shrines dedicated to guardian deities of the precincts.

Betsugu of Geku

・Takamino-miya: The highest-ranking Bessugu of Geku, enshrining the Aramitama (assertive and enterprising spirit) of Toyouke Omikami.
・Tsuchino-miya: Enshrined as the local deity (jijin) along the riverbank of Geku, protecting the ground and guarding against wind and water disasters.
・Kazenomiya: Enshrines the wind deities (Shinatsu-hiko no Mikoto and Shinatsu-hime no Mikoto), where prayers are offered to protect agricultural crops.
・Tsukiyomino-miya: Located slightly outside the main Geku grounds, this is the primary Bessugu of Geku, enshrining Tsukiyomi no Mikoto (the deity of the night and younger brother of Amaterasu Omikami).

Additionally, scattered throughout the precincts and surrounding areas of Geku are Sessha (12 shrines) and Massha (16 shrines) that serve as guardian deities procuring food for Jingu, as well as Shokansha protecting the grounds.

Betsugu of Naiku

・Aramatsuri-no-miya: Regarded as the highest-ranking Bessugu of Naiku. It enshrines the Aramitama of Amaterasu Omikami and holds a ritual status second only to the principal Shogu.
・Kazahimi-no-miya: Enshrines the wind deity said to have protected Japan by blowing the "divine wind" (kamikaze) during the Mongol invasions.
・Tsukiyomi-no-miya: A Bessugu of Naiku featuring four shrines standing in a row: Tsukiyomi no Mikoto, his Aramitama, Izanagi no Mikoto, and Izanami no Mikoto (located a short distance away from Naiku).
・Yamatohime-no-miyano-miya: Enshrines Yamatohime no Mikoto, who traveled from Yamato Province and ultimately established Naiku at its current location along the Isuzugawa River.

Major jurisdiction of shrine in the Naiku Precincts (Around the Shogu)

・Takimatsuri-kami: Located near the Mitarashi (purification site) of the Isuzugawa River along the path to the Naiku Shogu, this deity guards the river source and waterside (it is custom to first report your safe arrival here to the deity).
・Mishine-no-okura: An ancient, raised-floor storehouse used to store the sacred rice (kamimike) offered to the deities of Jingu.
・Miyanome-no-kami: Located right near the stone steps of the Shogu, this deity protects the boundaries (cardinal directions: east, west, north, and south) of the sacred precinct (worshiped as a small stone rather than a building).

In this way, Ise Jingu features many shrines possessing rich history and specific roles meticulously arranged around the two great pillars of Naiku and Geku.

Polar motion

The position at 90° North latitude fluctuates by several meters in the short term and moves by thousands of kilometers in the long term. The same applies to the location at 90 degrees south latitude. This is called polar motion, and the North Pole moves in an irregular circular pattern within a radius of several meters to about 10 meters, due to the overlap of the "Chandler cycle" (approximately 14 months) and a one-year cycle (seasonal variation). Ley lines are not absolute values, either.
This causes problems for GPS and maps (World Geodetic Systems such as WGS84), so an "average pole position" is defined as a standard (fixed value) by international agreement.

According to the analysis of the "5th Inbound Tourist Reception Expansion Survey" conducted by the Japan Association of Travel Agents (JATA), the most common response regarding the reception of inbound tourists in 2025, in terms of numbers (occupancy rate), was "approximately the same as the previous year (90% to 109%)" (37%), according to businesses. A trend of expansion to "110% or more" was reported by 33%, and "less than 89%" by 30%. Similar trends were observed in terms of sales (transaction value).
This survey received responses from 1096 entities, including accommodation providers, travel agencies, transportation companies, tourist facilities, and local governments/DMOs. The survey was conducted by the JTB Research Institute from June 25th to August 2nd, 2026. By country/region, Taiwan is currently the largest major market, followed by North America and Europe. Meanwhile, China saw a 20-point decrease from the previous survey. Looking ahead, expectations are high for strengthening reception in Europe, North America, and Southeast Asia.
The peak seasons for inbound tourists are spring (cherry blossom season and Easter) at 54% and autumn (autumn foliage season) at 53%, both exceeding half of the total, representing increases of 4 and 5 percentage points respectively from the previous survey. This indicates a further concentration of tourists during specific periods.
Regarding inbound booking channels (multiple responses allowed, up to three), accommodation providers most frequently used "overseas OTAs" at 71%, followed by "overseas travel agencies" at 64% and "Japanese travel agencies/travel service providers" at 57%. On the other hand, transportation providers used Japanese travel agencies at 77%, and tourist facilities and food service providers also used them at 75%, indicating that the primary distribution channel differs depending on the industry.

Selecting Accommodation on the Website that also applies to attracting inbound tourists

To establish popularity, it's necessary to consider users' booking motivations and conquer both search engines and psychological trust. First, there's the visual first impression. Users visiting a website judge the "atmosphere" of the accommodation within the first three seconds. Therefore, placing photos of "views from the guest room windows," "the steam and texture of the food," and "the mouthwatering quality of the bath," as well as immersive short videos including the surrounding environment (nature and cityscape), on the top page makes it easier for users to concretely imagine their stay. Next, there's the articulation of unique value (USP). Simply being "beautiful" or "delicious food" will get you lost in the competition. So, create "one and only reason." Clearly articulate the unique strength of your accommodation as a catchy slogan, such as "The only ○○ in Japan" or "Private experience limited to X groups per day." Targeted plan design is also necessary. By providing content optimized for specific usage scenarios such as "girls' trip," "anniversary," or "solo travel," you can match search needs.
And then there's building trust and transparency. In online booking, users fear "failure" the most. Therefore, utilizing UGC (User-Generated Content) is crucial. This involves embedding Instagram posts on the official website and publishing sincere responses to the latest reviews to visualize genuine reputation. Furthermore, to ensure information freshness, frequently updating blogs and social media with the latest room availability and seasonal local sightseeing information demonstrates that the hotel is "lively and active." Incidentally, it is wise to avoid the kind of exaggerated photos often seen in older print media, as the discrepancy with reality can create a negative impression.
Finally, there's the drive to direct bookings (increasing the direct sales ratio). To avoid over-reliance on OTAs and enhance the value of the own website, clearly stating that "the official website offers the lowest price," providing a best rate guarantee with exclusive benefits for registered members (one free drink, late check-out, etc.), and minimizing the steps to completing a booking while implementing smooth payment methods such as Apple Pay and Google Pay prevents drop-offs—smartphone optimization and simple payment.
Furthermore, as a technical SEO measure, the following keyword strategies are also important for achieving higher rankings in search results.
Local SEO, MEO: Enhance your Google Business Profile to secure traffic from map searches.
Area + Target Keywords: Strengthen exposure with place names, such as "Luxury accommodation in XX City" or "Kaiseki cuisine in the XX area." Ensure that the wonderful experience of staying at this accommodation is conveyed through photos alone, without requiring readers to read text.
