Balance of Payments for July 2025

From the contents of BOJ's balance of payments items

On September 8, the Ministry of Finance announced the balance of payments for July. The current account balance was a surplus of 2.6843 trillion JPY. The trade balance was a deficit 189.4 billion JPY, the travel balance was a surplus of 529.8 billion JPY. Air passenger was a deficit 22.1 billion JPY, Sea passenger was a deficit 1.3 billion JPY. and, Other services was a large deficit 1.146 trillion JPY, the overall service balance was a deficit 695.6 billion JPY.
The only area in which Japan has consistently maintained a surplus is the travel balance. While subcontracting factories for the light electrical appliance industry once supported local economies, hotels and restaurants have now taken their place. (Sales of duty-free souvenirs are treated as exports of goods, and are not included in the travel balance.) However, because the mainstream media does not report this, few Japanese people are aware of it.

Summary of tourist visitor numbers at major tourist facilities in the Mie prefecture during the summer vacation period in 2025

On the 16th, Mie Prefecture announced the number of visitors during the summer vacation period (July 19th - August 31st). A total of 5,225,637 people visited the prefecture's 24 major facilities. While the number of visitors per day remained at about 90% of the pre-COVID-19 level, it was an increase of 8.7% (9,543 people) compared to the previous year. This appears to be a backlash from last year, which was affected by Typhoon No. 10 and the Nankai Trough Earthquake Emergency Alert. Possible reasons for the sluggish growth include people refraining from visiting due to the Kansai Expo and the extreme heat, but no data is available on this.
By the way, as long-time readers already know, this total is the "cumulative number of people" and not the actual number. For example, the number of people at the destination "Naiku" is a very high percentage of people who had to "Okage Yokocho" and "Geku"too. be careful as this does not lead to market valuation.
